Mottainai Cycles Vintage Bicycle Clearance Sale!

Mottainai Cycles has been in its new location (23 Johnston Street Collingwood down the laneway at the rear) for a while now and we’re getting very settled in. This week we’ve been doing some spring cleaning (and further shop construction) and this weekend we’re finishing the cleaning off with a clearance sale. We’ll be selling bikes from $50 and frames from $25 so come by and grab a bargain and check out our new and improved shop space. The sale will be from 10.30 on Johnston Street just near the end of our laneway.

Aside from our spring cleaning the usual wheels are turning with classy restorations and cool customs galore coming through our doors, here’s a little selection to whet your appetite and there’ll be more to follow soon!

Mottainai Cycles Restored Vintage Bikes and Custom Builds October 2014

Spring is finally here and as the weather starts to heat up again so does Melbourne’s thriving bicycle scene. Here at Mottainai Cycles we’ve been busily restoring some of the classiest vintage whips in town: hi-end steel race bikes, robust three-speed commuters, simple and elegant single speeds and pretty much everything else that was made for the joy of cycling rather than mass produced for profit. Speaking of the joy of cycling we are restarting our Sunday vintage rides for spring at the revised time of 9am (rolling at 9.30) so why not grab your steel roadie and come join us!

For those that don’t know us already Mottainai Cycles is Melbourne’s only bike shop specialising in vintage restorations and we exist purely because of our love of bicycles. We also custom build bikes, offer hire bikes as well as service and repair any bikes. We are located at 23 Johnston Street (down the laneway), open every day 8.30-6.30 weekdays and 10.30-6.30 weekends. Contact (zero four)66670316 mottainaivintagebikes@gmail.com

Mottainai Cycles – Pure Vintage Class

Well, it’s been a very busy winter for us here at Mottainai Cycles – we’ve been working on beautifying our new space, servicing bikes for commuters, organising our regular vintage ride (more on that later), enjoying the drama of Le Tour de France and of course restoring beautiful bikes! It’s been a very European themed month which has seen us building classic French, English and Italian bikes – check them out below…

We’re also happy to announce the start of our regular vintage bike ride this Sunday (3rd August). We’ll be meeting at Mottainai at 8am Sunday mornings to leave at 8.30 for a casual 30-40km ride depending on what the group wants to do. So jump on your steel roadie and come join us, we’ll leave nobody behind so don’t worry if you’re not into racing this is just a fun ride! Check out our Strava page for info on upcoming rides and feel feel to join our club to share times etc.

We’re still open (relentlessly) every day, weekdays 8 til 6.30 and weekends 10.30 til 6.30 servicing all bikes, restoring vintage classics and building custom bikes to order. Come by and say hi!

It doesn’t feel like so long since we last felt the cool grip of winter but sure enough it’s here now. However the cold weather hasn’t stopped Melbourne’s hardcore cycle commuters and it hasn’t stopped Melbourne’s hardcore vintage bike mechanics at Mottainai either! This winter has seen us working on many classic bicycles but seemingly just to coincide with Le Tour de France we’ve had a lot of restorations of French bikes – a few you’ll see above and a few you’ll see next time. We love French bikes and it seems like Melbourne does too!

Our new shop continues to grow and evolve as the weeks pass by – come and see for yourself at 23 Johnston Street, Collingwood (down the cobblestone laneway bound to evoke memories of the Roobaix). We specialise in restorations of vintage bicycles as well as custom builds and affordable repairs/services of any bikes. We’re now open from 8am on weekdays (for all you commuters) and 10.30am on weekends, closing at 6.30 every day. Come by and find yourself a piece of cycling history – see you soon!

Late Autumn in Melbourne evokes a magical romance, sunset leaves blanketing the damp roads creating a quilt of extraordinary beauty, riding a bike that equates or mirrors such an aesthetic amplifies the experience. Life is too short to ride a shit bicycle! We are passionate about our bikes at Mottainaicycles.com we live to restore and service beautiful bikes, whether they are from Australia, France, England or Japan, we fetish-ize bikes and well crafted parts and like nothing more than building custom bikes or introducing you to one of our bikes already restored. We are the antithesis of the many bike sellers whom sell cheap, poor quality bikes with a vintage look from China (aptly called landfill bikes). We make restore and build bikes for people to love and that will be treasured. You deserve a beautiful bike!!! Come in to our shop down the cobble-stoned laneway at 23 Johnston Street Collingwood. We also service and repair all bikes in our workshop. Just a reminder that at Mottainai we DO service and repair all bicycle types………………… but we specialize in building and restoring vintage bikes.

Ok we have been at our new joint for a few months now and have been building bikes and building our new place simultaneously, it’s quite a show, I would like to thank all those who have generously given their time and expertise in helping us get to this point, there is still a ways to go but the shop is coming together well. We have a vision of supreme vintage coolness, a bicycle heavenly realm where bike lovers can quench their thirst and unabashedly oogle and stare at the incredible beauty of bikes made out of love and not just for profit (ie mass produced bikes from China).   So if you haven’t visited our new location then you are very welcome to pop in and check out what we are doing …. we consider ourselves an alternative bike-shop …. very friendly/chatty (lovers of bikes) and we do not push sales. New place is in Collingwood 23 Johnston Street down the cobblestone laneway, open everyday from 10.30-6.30  catrethowan@yahoo.com  0448884051   We are also on instagram now: mottainaicycles  and facebook: mottainai cycles, vintage bikes

Mottainai (もったいない, 勿体無い) (pronounced moht-tai-nai) is a Japanese term meaning “a sense of regret concerning waste when the intrinsic value of an object or resource is not properly utilized.”[1] The expression “Mottainai!” can be uttered alone as an exclamation when something useful, such as food or time, is wasted, meaning roughly “Oh, what a waste!”

Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai visited Japan at the request of the Mainichi Shimbun for an event related to the Kyoto Protocol in 2005.[4] At this time, she learned this word while discussing ecological issues with the Mainichi Shinbun’s editor-in-chief. She was impressed by the depth of similarity between the Japanese meaning of the word and equivalent concepts in English and Swahili concerning people’s responsibility to respect the earth through frugality and conservation. At the Kyoto Protocols, she wore a shirt with the word “MOTTAINAI” written on it in all capital rōmaji, and asked the audience to use the word in their everyday lives. She became a widely recognized celebrity in Japan for discovering and promoting what is referred to as a “MOTTAINAI” movement. Maathai told Japanese TV that she tried to find equivalent words to mottainai in other languages, so as to spread the concept all over the world, but in vain.

She promoted the concept of mottainai as a term that is roughly equivalent to the English phrase “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” or the proverbial phrase “Waste not, want not”. The term is more closely equivalent to the English phrase “What a waste”. Therefore, she promoted the use of the word mottainai as an international expression.
